The only history I can find is that in 1873 Canon William Selwyn, theologian and scholar, paid for the boring of deep wells to supply pumps in the village. Markings: Lion and a plate with the words "C. J. Ell & Sons, Engineers, Luton". Manufacturer: Pump by Joseph Evans, probably installed by C. J. Ell & Sons.
