Newick (click on photograph to bring up bigger/better version).

newick The big stone pump on the green at Newick, East Sussex, donated in 1897 by local plumber Richard Fuller, to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee - and I believe it still works. Photos supplied by Paul Snelling - thanks, Paul. Many embellishments: on the stone cap are bronze panels carrying the "VR" cypher and the date 1897. The front face of the pump carries two bronze plaques, separated by a bronze crown and, lower down, a bronze spout in the form of a lion's head. The large wrought iron handle has a bulbous counterweight, and at the back of the stone housing there's a stone inspection panel, secured with a couple of metal bolts. The stone bucket stand has a drainage channel, leading to a shallow stone trough. The two plaques carry inscriptions: newick
