hemyock The tiny pump in Hemyock, Devon, is completely overwhelmed by the elaborate cast iron wellhouse - complete with street lamp - to which it's attached. Although the pump has lost its handle, the structure seems to be well cared for, despite signs of it needing a new paint job. Thanks to Rob for the photographs. One panel carries an inscription: hemyock

THE GLORIOUS REIGN OF

VICTORIA.
THE CORONATION OF
EDWARD VII.
AND RESTORATION OF PEACE IN
SOUTH AFRICA.

FEAR GOD HONOR THE KING

iddesleigh This little pump is on the green at Iddesleigh, Devon. Photograph supplied by Richard Holladay - thanks, Richard.

Markings: Difficult to make out from the photo, but I have to admit that it looks very much like a "B" in a hexagon - although the contributor thinks it might be in a diamond.

Manufacturer: The pump is a typical "P" pump (i.e., the well-known trademark used by Puteus), but the possible "B" presents a problem!

The old stone pump in Fore St., Winkleigh, Devon. It was erected in 1832 when the Great Reform Act was passed, and carries the names of the men behind the reform - the Lords Grey, Brougham, Russell and Althorp. It was brought back to working order in 1996, and I assume that it's still working today. What's more, it was blessed during Winkleigh Fun Day, 2008. A panel behind the pump carries some more detail, and at the nearby Village Hall there's a commemorative plaque, one of a series of 26 produced in 1994 by potter Harry Juniper - my thanks to Richard Holladay for supplying these close-up photos.

Markings: "1832" and the names of the Lords.
