nr Dublin
Cottages, Ardross, Highland. Photos supplied by John Bolton - thanks,
John. Markings: "HP75" on the barrel and a very small "C" on the handle. Manufacturer: The HP75 is currently unidentified, but the pump bears a very great similarity to the Model BSA-75 produced by the Jiangyan Fashion Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd., of China. The small "C" on the handle has been seen on a very different pump in Laughton-en-le-Morthen, South Yorks - and this pump is also offered for sale by the Chinese company. However, the Czech Company, Kovoplast, also supplies very similar pumps. |

This pump at Covington, South Lanarkshire, has a decorative handle fulcrum very similar indeed to those seen on designs by Macfarlane's of Glasgow. Photo on the left was supplied by John Gow - thanks, John. However, a follow-up visit by John Bolton of the Scottish Ironwork Foundation resulted in a close-up photo of the pump cap, which is inscribed: | ![]() |
||
| LION FOUNDRY CO. LTD. KIRKINTILLOCH | ||||
| John (B) was able to explain that the similarity to Macfarlane designs is not surprising as the firm was set up in 1880 by three ex-Macfarlane employees who then very quickly recruited a chief designer from Macfarlanes. This story echoes the one I've been told regarding the similarity of early Lee Howl pumps to existing Joseph Evans pumps. | ||||
| Markings: On cap - "LION FOUNDRY CO.
LTD. KIRKINTILLOCH". Manufacturer: Lion Foundry, Kirkintilloch. |
