allanton A smart pump with clean lines in Allanton, Scottish Borders. Looking at the view of the top, the two holes show where the cap was originally fixed. Photo supplied by John Gow - thanks, John.

Markings: None.

Manufacturer: Almost certainly Macfarlane's of Glasgow.

ardross nr Dublin Cottages, Ardross, Highland. Photos supplied by John Bolton - thanks, John.

Markings: "HP75" on the barrel and a very small "C" on the handle.

Manufacturer: The HP75 is currently unidentified, but the pump bears a very great similarity to the Model BSA-75 produced by the Jiangyan Fashion Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd., of China. The small "C" on the handle has been seen on a very different pump in Laughton-en-le-Morthen, South Yorks - and this pump is also offered for sale by the Chinese company. However, the Czech Company, Kovoplast, also supplies very similar pumps.

covington This pump at Covington, South Lanarkshire, has a decorative handle fulcrum very similar indeed to those seen on designs by Macfarlane's of Glasgow. Photo on the left was supplied by John Gow - thanks, John. However, a follow-up visit by John Bolton of the Scottish Ironwork Foundation resulted in a close-up photo of the pump cap, which is inscribed: covington
LION FOUNDRY CO. LTD. KIRKINTILLOCH
John (B) was able to explain that the similarity to Macfarlane designs is not surprising as the firm was set up in 1880 by three ex-Macfarlane employees who then very quickly recruited a chief designer from Macfarlanes. This story echoes the one I've been told regarding the similarity of early Lee Howl pumps to existing Joseph Evans pumps.
Markings: On cap - "LION FOUNDRY CO. LTD. KIRKINTILLOCH".

Manufacturer: Lion Foundry, Kirkintilloch.

darvel A most unusually styled pump in Darvel, East Ayrshire - and it works. Photo supplied by Alex Pinkerton - thanks, Alex - who informs us that the pump was installed in the grounds of the former Brown’s Institute in the early 1920s, replacing an earlier one which dated from 1876. The cap and handle have since been replaced, the former looking very much like a standard Joseph Evans design, and at the back of the pump head is a hinge which probably held the original cap.

Markings: None.

Manufacturer: The pumps in nearby Sorn and in Plockton, Highlands, aren't identical, but have many similarities. It was tempting to guess that they are Glenfield and Kennedy models, as the company was located in nearby Kilmarnock - but evidence has come to light that they are highly likely to be Registered Design No 2 by the Glasgow firm, George Smith & Co.

plockton This one, at Plockton, Highlands, is practically identical to those at Darvel and Sorn, East Ayrshire, although it has found a new role as a handy plinth for a sundial. Markings: None.

Manufacturer: Probably George Smith & Co., Glasgow.

sorn Compare this pump at Sorn, East Ayrshire, with the one at nearby Darvel and another in Plockton, Highlands. The cap's obviously a replacement, and probably the handle is too. Photo supplied by Alex Pinkerton - thanks, Alex - who notes that there's a hinge still present at the back of the pump head, where the original cap was probably attached..

Markings: None.

Manufacturer: It was tempting to guess that it's a Glenfield and Kennedy model, but evidence has come to light that it's highly likely to be Registered Design No 2 by the Glasgow firm, George Smith & Co.
