This pump, in private hands, is of a type that was known as a contractor's pump, and originally intended to be portable. It's about 1.6m in height, and its barrel, spout and downpipe are made from riveted sections, the handle fulcrum being bolted on. There's a plaque on the side of the pump, inscribed as follows: |
| SMITH
& WATSON LTD [Hedgehog Logo] IRONMONGERY STORES ROSS |
|
| Markings: None other. Manufacturer: Possibly Smith & Watson, of Ross-on-Wye, or were they just the suppliers? |

The
Wilton Road pump, on the outskirts of the town near the river crossing. It's
just about identical with one at Hannington, Swindon. Markings: Can't quite make it out in this photo, but it's a Bamford's shield plate. Manufacturer: Bamford's of Uttoxeter. |
| No pic. | There's another small pump in Ross-on-Wye, although it has been moved slightly from its original location in Edde Cross St., and in its place is a plaque with the following inscription: |
| THIS 3RD PUBLIC
WELL WAS SUNK 1844 AND PUMP ERECTED THEREIN ANNO. DOMINI. 1845, BY THE ROSS TOWN COMMISSIONERS. THE LAND BEING PURCHASED BY PRIVATE SUBSCRIPTION, & THE WHOLE FOR EVER DEDICATED TO THE PUBLIC. |
