On the High St., Shepreth, Cambs, and in 2011
it was reported to still be working, although a bit leaky.
An investigation in 2025 revealed
that water was constantly being pushed up through the borehole by sheer water
pressure, probably because the water table had risen. There was no longer any
need for any pumping action, and hence the decision was taken to retain the
pump's barrel, but fit it with a tap. The operating rod and its valve were
removed, the tap fitted internally, and the water led via a nozzle to the
spout. Should the water pressure cease at any time in the future, the operating
rod and valve have been retained, behind the pump.
Closer examination
reveals that there is a drain plug at the bottom of the barrel, probably
designed as an anti-frost device.
Thanks to John Hurst for the earlier
photo on the left, and to Andrew Maison for those dated 2025 on the

Markings: A very indistinct part
number on the barrel - 97026? - and "68325" on the
handle.
