This cast iron-clad pump is on Piper's Tye Green at Galleywood, Essex. It carries an inscription as follows:
Replica of the village pump that stood on Pipers Tye until the 1900s.
Presented to the Galleywood Parish Council by Norman Bayes on the 1st February 1987.
Markings: None other reported.

goldhanger An unusual one at Goldhanger, Essex, which reportedly still works. Photo supplied by Borin Van Loon - thanks, Borin. It carries an inscribed plaque:
"THIS WELL IS 70 FEET DEEP
WITH A FURTHER
100 FEET OF ARTESIAN BORE
MAKING 170 FEET IN ALL
THE WELL WAS DUG DURING
THE HOT SUMMER OF 1921"
The housing must conceal some form of high gearing, as a 70 ft operating rod would be very heavy. There's a dual spout arrangement, one at low level for buckets and the other at high level probably for water carts. Apparently, to the right of the pump, there's a "local curiousity known as The Pug Stone, a semi-circular piece of granite said to be part of a grinding stone from a pug mill". [Pug Mill: a machine for mixing and working clay and other materials into pug. Pug: loam or clay mixed and worked into a soft, plastic condition without air pockets for making bricks or pottery.]
Markings: None other.

Manufacturer: Unk.

great dunmow In the centre of Great Dunmow, Essex, this pump is very similar to one at Thaxted, but with evidence that a lower spout has been replaced by a higher one. There is some history behind the pumps in this village, as their removal led to a pump riot in 1786 with 12 people being incarcerated in Chelmsford Gaol as a result. Photo supplied by John Gow - thanks, John.
