Markings: A manufacturer's nameplate has been very roughly highlighted with white paint, but this unfortunately makes it even more difficult to decypher. It looks like "Wyatt Brothers", "xxxx xxxx Engineers" and "Whitchurch, Salop".

blists hill

cardington This one's in front of the Royal Oak, at Cardington, Shrops, but it has currently been relegated from its original prime position near the front door to this insignificant corner.

Markings: Two shields of different shape, the upper one stating "7962/MARK/17.X", and the lower one "BAMFORD'S/UNIVERSAL/BU/PUMP".

Manufacturer: Bamford's.

chorley At Lower Chorley, nr Chorley, Shrops. The stopcock has been removed and is perched on top of the pump. Photograph supplied by Tina Jones - thanks, Tina.

Markings: "CLIMAX" and "887 68".

horderley A large pump in a field in front of a farmhouse at Horderley, near Craven Arms, Shrops.

Markings: Taken with telephoto and can't get close enough to determine if there's a maker's name or trademark.

ludlow At the far end of a narrow alleyway off Broad St., Ludlow, Shrops.

Merrington, Shrops. The inscription on the wall behind it recounts that the well was sunk by Robert and Elizabeth Slaney for the benefit of the village, and the pump added in 1864 by Thomas and Elizabeth Eyton.

This one at Aston Square, near Middleton, Shrops, seems to be cast iron with a wooden case, but unusually also with a wooden spout. There's a long inscription on a plaque just behind it, but it's unreadable in this photo.

neen sollars An odd place for a pump - on an obscure public footpath that goes through the corner of a field about a quarter of a mile from the village of Neen Sollars, Shrops.

priest weston The village pump in Priest Weston, Shrops. Looks very forlorn, and probably not even in its original position.

A smart one with an iron trough at Ryton, Shrops.

stokesay Quite a hefty one near Stokesay Castle, Stokesay, Shrops.

Markings: Lion, and "Pump Pottery" around the cap.

Manufacturer: Joseph Evans - looks like their "Strong Deep Well Lift Pump", which could be supplied with 3½", 4" or 4½" downpipes.

wistanstow Wistanstow, Shrops. This pump sits in its neatly fenced off area next to the footpath to the village hall. The handle moves freely but, despite much effort by me, no water appears.

Markings: Flag and 3 IN.
